It was 1963. I was five years old. Mom had just had her last baby. A baby boy. Our family was now complete, with four girls and two boys. And a mom and a dad!
Even though I was only five, I remember the anticipation and excitement of a new baby coming to our family. I was in Kindergarten and for my show and tell I wanted to show the class my new baby brother. Arrangements were made for the class to walk to my house and see our new baby.
On an early Spring day, a few few weeks after my baby brother was born, my teacher had the school class line up single file and follow her down the sidewalk a couple of blocks to my house. I'm sure I was at the head of the line. After all it was my show and tell! After arriving at the house, my classmates and I all gathered outside the large living room window and watched as mom lifted my baby brother up high for all to see!
I can't remember how my classmates reacted, but I do know how proud I felt. Mom and I had just delivered the best show and tell of the year! Well... besides me showing my tonsils in a bottle!

This is a wonderful throwback. I love that you lived just a few blocks away from your school, and how sweet that you were proud. Some siblings are jealous. This is terrific!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great story! My son was about that age when we had our last baby. Hopefully he felt the same way! I doubt they do show and tells like that now a days..that's awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun story today. He was adorable as a kid, I don't remember him as a baby.
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome show and tell! What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteJen, I read your post on your blog but didn't see a place to leave a comment. So, letting you now here that I think it very clever to showcase pictures of your children last year and this year. Great post.
DeleteIt's pretty hard to beat tonsils in a jar, but I think you did it! Can you imagine the entire class walking to someone's house TODAY to see a new baby for show and tell? Good times, the 60s! (I was about the same age as the little sister on the right in 1963.)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun story! Those were the days when the class could walk to someone's house for show and tell. Nowadays there would be permission slips in triplicate to fill out and waivers to sign and on and on. That's so sweet you were that proud of your little brother!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lori about nowadays. I remember when I was eight my mom brought our three kittens in for the class to see. That would probably not fly now. But the best show and tell I remember doing: I forgot it was show and tell day, and desperate to participate, I ran to the coat closet. When my turn came, I talked on an on about my winter HAT! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThat is just too funny Maureen!
DeleteWow!! What a special moment and memory! Hands down the best show when it's wrapped up in a field trip. That is so awesome!
